ERPNext finance implementation led by a CFO, not left to the partner.

ERPNext is the most capable open-source ERP available to an Indian SME, and the finance module is where implementations succeed or quietly fail. We own the finance design, the Tally migration and the cut-over, working with your implementation partner, so the system reports margin and cash from the first month.

Why ERPNext finance goes wrong

The partner configures the software. Nobody designs the finance.

Most ERPNext implementations are led by a technical partner and a plant or operations head. The chart of accounts is copied from Tally, cost centres are an afterthought, GST is set up but e-invoicing and reconciliation are not, and the opening balances are loaded as one lump. Six months later the operations modules work, the accountant keeps a parallel Tally, and the promoter still gets the MIS in Excel.

The fix is to treat finance as the design owner. The chart of accounts, cost centres, dimensions, item valuation, approval workflows and reports are decisions about how you want to run the business, and they have to be made by someone who will use the output.

We have run finance inside global ERPs and implemented ERPNext and Odoo for Indian SMEs. We are vendor-neutral: if Odoo or a Tally-plus-tools stack fits better, we say so before you spend.

Signs this is your implementation

  • ERPNext is live for operations but the books are still closed in Tally
  • The chart of accounts has 900 ledgers and no cost centres
  • GST returns are prepared outside the system every month
  • Opening balances do not match the last audited balance sheet
  • Nobody can get a product-wise margin report out of it
What we do

How a CFO-led ERPNext finance implementation runs.

  1. 01

    Finance design before configuration

A chart of accounts built for management reporting, cost centres and accounting dimensions for branch, product line and project, item valuation method, fixed-asset and depreciation setup, and the approval workflows for purchase, payment and journal. Signed off by the people who will read the reports.

  2. 02

Tally to ERPNext migration, done to the rupee

Masters cleaned and de-duplicated, ledgers mapped to the new chart, open invoices and bills loaded individually so ageing works, inventory loaded with valuation, fixed assets with history. Opening balances tie to the last audited balance sheet, and the trial balance is signed off before go-live.

  3. 03

GST, e-invoicing and compliance inside the system

GSTIN-wise set-up, HSN and tax templates, e-invoice and e-way bill integration, TDS and TCS, and GSTR-1 and GSTR-2B reconciliation out of ERPNext, so compliance stops being a monthly export.

  4. 04

Cut-over, the first close and the MIS

A cut-over plan with a parallel month where it is worth it, user acceptance by the accounts team, the first month-end closed inside ERPNext with us in the room, and the management report pack built on the system's reports. Then we step back and the partner supports.

Typical outcomes

What a well-run implementation delivers.

Shown as ranges across comparable, anonymised engagements. Your numbers depend on your starting point.

8–14 wks
finance design to go-live for a single-entity SME
< 5 days
month-end close by the third month on the system
0
parallel Tally after the first clean close
100%
opening balances reconciled to the audited balance sheet

Timelines are for ₹10–200 crore single or two-entity businesses with a capable implementation partner. Multi-entity groups and manufacturing with complex BOMs take longer. Licence and partner costs are separate from our fee.

Common questions

ERPNext finance implementation: common questions

Do you implement ERPNext yourselves or work with a partner?

We lead the finance workstream and work with a Frappe or ERPNext implementation partner for technical configuration, customisation and hosting. If you already have a partner, we work with them. If not, we help you select one and keep the scope and the invoices honest.

Should we move from Tally to ERPNext at all?

Not always. Tally with connected tools serves many businesses under ₹30 crore well. ERPNext earns its keep when you need inventory, manufacturing, projects or multi-branch operations integrated with the books, or product-wise margin without spreadsheets. We give a written recommendation after a short assessment, and we are equally comfortable recommending Odoo.

How is the Tally data migrated?

Masters are exported, cleaned and mapped; open invoices, bills, stock and fixed assets are loaded as individual records so ageing and depreciation work; and the opening trial balance is reconciled to the last audited balance sheet before go-live. History older than the cut-over date stays in a read-only Tally for reference.

What does the CFO-led part cost?

A fixed fee for the design and migration phase, plus a monthly retainer through go-live and the first close, quoted after the assessment. It is separate from the partner's implementation fee and from any hosting or support subscription. For most SMEs the combined cost is well below a mid-market ERP licence alone.
